GPRS
(General
Packet Radio Service)
GPRS or General Packet Radio Service, uses Internet-style packet
based technology that lets you stay permanently connected to the
Internet - but it only uses the radio link for the duration of
time that it transfers data. GPRS creates new opportunities for
network operators in the form of new services and sources of income.
Since the user is constantly online, it is most likely that operators
will only charge for the amount of data transferred.
GPRS provides a virtual constant connection and the speed needed
for satisfactory Internet usability. Furthermore, GPRS allows
for simultaneous voice and data communication, so one can receive
incoming calls or make outgoing calls while in the midst of a
data (WAP) session. GPRS compliments rather than replaces the
current data services available through today's GSM digital cellular
networks such as circuit-switched data and Short Message Service
(SMS). GPRS is a vital step in the ongoing development of high-speed
mobile voice and data communications.
